Since 1968, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter has been a leading arena for Norwegian and international art, with a central art collection, as well as a broad program of exhibitions and musical events.
On Monday, 30 September 2019, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter officially announced artist Otobong Nkanga as the inaugural winner of the Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award. The award presents 100,000 USD in prize money to a distinguished, mid-career artist whose work will inspire and motivate future generations to active participation and social responsibility.
In addition to the prize, there is an acquisition budget for the inclusion of the artist’s work in the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter collection, and the winner will have a dedicated exhibition at the museum the following year.
MONA created the announcement video about Otobong Nkanga's award, featuring a studio visit with the artist at work, interviewing her about her practice and highlighting past work.
